Take a Tour of Cannery Row in Monterey, California

Cannery Row in Monterey, California, is a waterfront street that is known for its shopping and entertainment.  It originally housed a vibrant fish canning industry focused on sardines that opened in 1908.  The industry operated through both world wars. Then, after World War II, the sardines disappeared, and the industry closed.

A few years after the industry’s collapse, famous author John Steinbeck published a book called Cannery Row, which romanticized Monterey’s Ocean View Avenue and the once popular fishing industry. This popular book led to a thriving tourism industry in Monterey, California, and Cannery Row, in particular.
